Luvi laughs softly, bumping back gently against Wynters as if to say not to worry about jostling her or her brother’s careless words. The older filly shakes her head and rolls her eyes as Ravin continues to chatter on: “No. Well, maybe the jays if you get too close to their nest, one got my cheek once, it really hurt.”
“He almost stepped on their fledgling.” Luvi says Wynters, and Ravin either doesn’t hear her or carries on as if he hasn’t. “But no, no there’s really not. It’s so safe here that it’s kinda boring.”
Luvi rolls her eyes with a quiet huff as she continues to lead the way toward the nest, a nonverbal disagreement with her brother’s assessment of their home. A few feet away, she pauses, knowing that to move any closer would be to startle the lark that might be sitting on the nest.
“Wait here.” Her command is as soft as the rest of her speech, and she doesn’t wait for compliance. Instead, as her words fade into nothingness, so does Luvi. Within a few heartbeats, the space where the filly once stood appears like nothing more than empty space.
Yet the grass bends and forms into the shape of four hooves moving closer to the lark nest, and Ravin says, more quietly than he’s been speaking: “It’s kinda freaky when she does that, the invisibility thing. She’s like, crazy good at hide and seek.”
