Myrna doesn’t immediately draw back when her companion stiffens, and she is glad when the younger mare closes her eyes and breathes deeply. Myrna’s heart aches for her, for the vulnerability she has shown and the fears that had driven her from her home in search of a better life for her daughter.
Cascadia speaks again of not wanting her daughter to be a pawn in a political game. Myrna suspects, though does not pry, that Cascadia had also freed herself from such a life, and Myrna only wishes that she’d escaped as young as her child has.
But there is no changing the past; there is only moving forward. And here, in the Gates, Myrna is sure, will be the best place to do that. She is glad when the sound of laughter once more colors her companion’s voice, and she smiles at the mention of her children.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to have my family,” she admits, for while her mother and siblings are not as frequently seen in the kingdom, they are there when she needs them. Or simply when she needs a break from her two rowdy offspring.
“You’ve brought her somewhere safe.” Myrna replies when Cascadia’s tone saddens, “The journey will fade into memory, but she will always know you brought her here.” Sometimes the worst memories don’t fade, and Myrna knows it. But she also knows that they can be softened by happier memories, and outshone by a lifetime of safety and contentment. She hopes that will be true not only for Wynters, but also for Cascadia.
