    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

and I discovered that my castles stand

upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

He hears the whinny from across the meadow and raises his head, peering through the shadowy forest in an attempt to see the caller. It is too dark though, and the whinnying horse too far away, so Texas leaves his quiet grazing and crosses through the tall-grass meadow and slips beneath the shaded forest canopy. Now, without the glare of the sun in his eyes, he can see a stallion standing at the edge of the kingdom. He’s not seen this horse before, but the stranger smells of the Valley, and Texas can only assume that he is here on some sort of diplomatic mission.

He glances over his shoulder once, hoping to see a silver figure, but he is as alone as always.

“Welcome to the Falls,” he says, offering a brief smile to the buckskin stallion. “What can I help you with?” Alliances, seeing where there kingdoms stand, that sort of thing. There will be questions that Texas can’t answer both because Tiberios had turned them on their heads before disappearing and because the Queen is so often absent. She is ill, Texas knows, but that excuse can only last for so long. “My name is Texas,” he adds.
