She did not return his touch, his passion. He stilled, retreated slowly. His eyes cooled as he studied her. Had he pushed too hard? He had not misread her signals, her words. He could feel part of her within him. What she'd explained had further confirmed it. What did she require of him?
He knew her. Her life, her love, her mistakes and regrets. All of her. She'd given these. He knew her. But he did not know her mind in the present. Could not possibly know it.
She didn't know his thoughts either.
He smiled, parted from her side again to see her better, and bumped her chin playfully. This quiet sullen queen was not his Reagan.
"Hey," he said gently. "You know how fast I ran -flew!- to get back to you?"
He did. He remembered how frantic he'd been to return to her. How he could feel that little part of her spirit guiding him back. Where, just maybe, he belonged. He still had doubts, uncertain how genuine this was with them, but he tried to keep them buried. Time would prove them true or false.
"I do feel you," he confessed. "And I could think of nothing but getting back here to you. I had to be certain you were safe."
He was slowly accepting the effects of the magic, the burst that overloaded her so badly she'd temporarily lost her sight. She'd been so powerful. Even without her magic, she felt powerful. She was regal, and wise. And he just a foolish pup romping in her shadow.
He could feel her within him. And he always wanted to.
