    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    Words.
    Spoken to.
It had never been spoken to before.
It had heard words – the small others of the den had often communicated in such a fashion. It had heard the murmuring of words from the large others in this new land as well. But it had never had words, coming or going. It wasn’t even sure what words really meant, or how to use them.

How was it to know, really?

So when this large other with the red eyes gives it words of its own, it doesn’t know how to respond. The tone is not menacing, not angry. These are good signs. It sits dumbfounded in the grass, staring up at the red-eyed other with large, searching eyes. It tries desperately to understand. But understanding is so far away; so far out of its reach.

The large other begins to leave and without thought it picks itself up from the ground and follows. It does not dare touch the large other (though the touch had been surprisingly warm and good), but it follows as closely as possible without contact. It has no inclination of where they might be going, but it was beginning to fall dark and company seemed a better alternative than sleeping in a strange land alone.
