    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    Solace

It has occurred to Solace, as a passing thought, that the earthy mare before her may be a shifter - but she had not dwelled on that thought. To be able to change from skin to skin must be a glorious thing, to be able to fly, or to be protected by a set of fine, sharp claws was enviable - but the idea was nothing new to her. She had let it go, just as she had noted the other pelt color and then never thought of it again. She was much more conscious of the others dark eyes looking at her, and nearly spilling over with their worry and confusion. Keeper is the elder of the too, yet Solace feels the need to fill the vacancy, be the comforter, to make things better.

The young mare had no way to know that the shifting and the worry were linked, she didn't have any way to make a guess at what was troubling the mare, so she didn't try and pry. Her suggestion is taken as well as it possibly could have been and she is content to have something to do for the day. If the other mare wanted to talk about what was bothering her it would probably come up later.

"Sounds good to me," she agrees, pleased.

With a newfound energy in her step, the tri-colored girl turns her body to walk along the shore of the lake, pointing them south. After a few steps, she tilts her head to look at her companion. "I'm Solace, by the way, Tangerine's daughter."  she assumed that her mother must have met some of Hyaline's residents during her springs and summers here. "...If you knew her," she adds, as an afterthought.

Now that they are closer together she can tell the musky scent was definitely coming from the mare, and before a silence can grow between them Solace falls back on the only other topic they had touched on, for conversation.

    "So, are you a shifter?"

    you are my sunshine
