    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

"Cryil" he repeats, rolling the syllables around in his mind. He taps her gently on the shoulder before touching his own chest and adding "Njenyi."

Her green eyes remind him of the fresh savanna grass before it grows gold in the sun, and he is pleased. How rare, to have a willing mare wander so readily into the territory he has claimed. Beqanna is certainly s land of wonders; he understands why his sire had never been truly happy while he was away.

The two golden sisters join them, and Njenyi steps toward them, touching first Cream, then Custard affectionately on the side of the neck. His whole herd assembled now, and himself full of pride and responsibility. Their numbers should double come spring, and the thought of stick-legged foals makes that sense of responsibility even stronger.

He's oblivious to whatever is going on between the mares; Njenyi only hears the seemingly friendly introductions. "You are family," he tells them with mild affection, "Now be friends."

The red and white stallion isn't exactly sure what equates friendship among mares, but surely they'll have some things in common. They can discuss mothering, if nothing else - the children each of them carry will be siblings, so getting along is certainly in their best interest.
