    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

The branches haunted the forest floor with twisted shapes. The trunks along the trees were knotted and gnarled. They had already lived great lives and seen thousands come and go. Newton wondered what the trees thought of the sudden change. Had they too lost their families in the earthquake and upheaval? Were the meadows drowning in sorrow for the loss of their flowers and stream’s? How torn was the land of Beqanna. How had the faeries ripped away at the soil? How had they peeled away the grass and uprooted the trees? What was left of the Tundra or of the Dale? Sahm mourned for his old home, the Gates. The mother tree most likely laid in ruin and waste. Sahm knew that his father would have grieved deeply for the loss of his land, but thankfully instead Jason was dancing in the afterlife with Fiasko. Heaven had a Gates. Heaven had a Tundra. Heaven was the place to be.

As mere mortals Newton and Sahm were stuck on the weathered ground of Beqanna. They silently wove through trees and thought to themselves. Newton was growing tired, and Sahm knew that the extra weight on Newton was now bearing down on his legs. ”We can stop here.” Sahm said. ”Thank goodness.” Newton responded with a worded exhale.

Soon the duo stood side-to-side and cheek-to-cheek. Each leaned into the other for support and rest. In time Sahm detected a rustling amongst the bushes. He straightened his stance and peered to his right. ”Who goes there?” He spoke.
