Brine

The darkness invites her like a warm blanket, as if laying in the sun had given her a foreign chill unshakeable without the heat of black seeping into her roan coat. Backwards to most, but sensible to her. It made sense, it always makes sense in the dark.

And unfortunately, Nerine is casted in beautiful shades of different light. Hardly a pea-sized shadow to bask in.

So, she is here seeking refuge where she knows best; the forest. A place where she grew and thrived and even raised her little golden world, a place where the brightest part of her life was born right here. Right here under this beautifully tall pine tree in a bed of pinely-scented needles scoured across the floor as she pushed for hours. And hours. And hours.

And yet, she stands there now, feeling almost defeated. Seeing herself nestled against the tree trunk pushing in desperation, alone, abandoned--confused. Lost on what to do next, if her baby is alive still despite her persistent pushing and lack of relief. Lost on what to do if her baby is alive, and does come into this world. All of it seemingly for nothing, as if her decision to save two lives instead of end them all for nothing, because her baby Ruth left her.

Left her for the next step in life, the step where babies grow to be diplomats and soldiers away from their parents. Away from her cooing, her protection, her grasp.

She hasn’t been touched in so long, and at this point it is almost embarrassing.
