    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

ghosts and devils come calling; Malik
    #2
His mother had been visiting this particular patch of woods quite a bit the past few days, and Malik has become suspicious. Crouching low, he creeps through the low grass in the shape of a pine marten with inky black fur.

Is Mazikeen keeping snacks here, he wonders? Had she and his father felled some large beast that they’re not sharing with him?! Malik suddenly remembers (incorrectly) that his mother has only been bringing him stale rabbits. He ignores the correction by the dark griffon that swoops down over him to land in a tree, but his ears prick curiously as the creature gives the squawk that means there’s someone nearby.

That is probably the movement or sound that catches Vital’s attention, or perhaps the way that Malik turns from a weasel to a horse, appearing out of the tall mountain grass. He’s still the same shade of black, with a narrow white blaze and a cloak of feathers across his chest and shoulders. It is hard to see the glow of his black markings in the summer sunshine, but his feathers glisten iridescently in the light and his short obsidian horns catch it as well.

Taller now, he can see the other horse that his companion had so easily spotted from the air. It’s a colt, younger than Malik, with a beautiful coat and colorful markings. Has his mother been visiting this boy? Malik frowns, because she is only supposed to love himself (and maybe Bolder? He’s not quite puzzled that one out yet.) Surely she isn’t coming here because she likes this boy.

There must be a simpler explanation.

“Are you here to be a snack?” He asks, stepping closer and ignoring the chittering of the griffon perched behind him. This doesn’t look like Raum’s sibling, and Malik frowns until he suddenly finds the simplest explanation of all.

He exclaims excitedly, only moments after asking his first question: “Oh no, that’s not it! You’re here to be my friend, aren’t you?” This is a marvelous discovery, and having no awareness of how odd his first question might seem, is beaming excitedly at this new companion.
