He’d been less fruitful this past season, but he doesn’t mind. He’s been fortunate these past few years, and these latest pregnancies have simply been the icing on the cake. He’s still eager to see the results, so he’s been keeping an eye on Becca and Raincloud as the season has progressed. And, finally, it’s time for the first of them to be born.
He hangs around outside the cave mouth as the birth progresses (no sense in him getting involved in that mess), and when he’s sure that enough time has elapsed for the whole business to be over, he enters. It takes a moment for his eyes to adjust, but when they do, he’s pleased to see what has now become a familiar sight. Becca stands in the cave with a little foal at her side, suckling happily away. He takes a few steps forward in the close confines of the cave. As he nears, more details of the child come into view. A silvered dark coat (like her mother), with a few patches of white (like himself). And a girl. One of his few girls.
He smiles, pleased, but keeps a respectful distance away. He’s learned how ornery Becca can be after birth, and she’s certainly in better condition now than she’d been after Oli’s birth. If she’s going to lash out, now would be the time. “Well done Becca. How are you doing? What have you named the girl?” He takes another step forward but still hangs back - he knows Becca far too well by now.
