Nightfall.
A shrouded darkness welcomes her back into the living world. There are crickets chirping, a musical sound that she hasn’t heard in years.
There’s a rustle in the trees, a soft summer breeze.
She blinks.
Grass tickles her fetlocks and the sweet scent of wild flowers caresses her face as she looks up toward the star-studded sky with a dreamy smile. The world’s beauty dulled the moment her heart stopped beating and when she could no longer taste the air in her lungs. Life beyond the limitations of Beqanna was easy as she busied herself with Larva’s affection. They had their family, but more importantly, each other.
But suddenly she is here, without him.
The gates of death flung open and so many figures of the past flooded through. From afar, Dillan watched, but then her soul was hooked with the others when Shiya’s life was jeopardized like Darling’s. Larva intervened and disappeared among the masses. Inwardly, Dillan hoped he would return to their eternity, but he never did.
Unable to be away from him, unable to live without her body curled against him, Dillan eventually followed.
But, still, they are apart.
There’s a trace of his scent that mingles with the flowers, but she does not see him among the living yet. Her amber eyes drop from the tree tops to the surrounding meadow in confusion. This world is the same, but new – familiar but strange. When she swallows another breath, warmth branches through her entire core and feeds her the strength to step forward, then again and again until she is within the field of wildflowers. Ladybugs and butterflies flutter from their perches as another breeze tousles her mane.
Dillan doesn’t know why she is here, why they’ve been granted another chance to live, but she drinks in the beauty that she has missed, savoring every sweet moment in fear it will be ripped away from her again.
