    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    Rustic
She looks for her sister, he twin, her true other half. They had been separated for a long time. She had followed her father around watching and learning all that she could. Now standing there quivering with shock she watches as the paths of her herd twist and turn, splitting off, creating new life, and changing her world forever. She watches as her sister runs off, she watches as her father disappears into the dark, she watches as the other set of twins make their way far from these plains. She just stands there and watches. For a moment she is torn, what to do what to say, who to follow. Part of her wishes to follow her sister, another part of her wishes to follow her father. Yet something reminds her of her mother. Nickering, seeking out the mare, Rustic finally finds her path. She would find her mother, she would take care of her, and help her settle into their new home.

Leaving the few that stayed, she couldn’t do it, they needed someone to stay with them, they needed something familiar in the face of this new twist in their lives. She looks to the new stallion as he busily begins to herd the remaining numbers towards his home. Rustic continued to call out for her mother, as much as she wanted to stay with her sister, she already had the feeling that they had grown too far apart to be anything more than “that’s my twin” to one another. Trying to renew a relationship between them just didn’t seem possible, their time together had been short, and no true connection had been formed before she had taken off to discover the world. Father hadn’t even been able to tell them apart, the fact that he said her sisters name struck a bitter cord within her. In a single moment jealousy and hate started to build within her, towards the stallion and towards her sister.

The first time he said one of their names, and it was Clarrise’s. She takes off through the brush and the trees, unsure of her mother’s location, ripping through the land until she arrives at the new herdland. Here she stops just short of the ledge, rocks tumble down the cliff echoing as they bounce off other rocks. She watches for a moment thinking of following them, but then something catches her eye and she cow hops in her surprise. One small hoof slips loosing more rocks to break and splinter their way down. She scrambles away from the edge her ears waffling to the sides and her head dropping to her knees.

Let's be honest with ourselves. The painted woman readily drew attention with the sleekness of her spine, the quirk of a brow, the flash of green from her eye. But now, she had a whole big belly just begging to be gawker at. Cryil was not one to ask for head turns but she doesn't deny the bulge of a foal that was bestowed upon her from Njenyi.

So now, as pretty as you please, Cryil and her lady lumps saunter across the grounds with a dipped head to clip at the new growing grass. Boy, this baby was hungry! The russet and white mare goes on like this for sometime till scent of another reaches her. The heavy skull rips skyward with attention focused like a fined tuned predator. Cryil is tall, statuesque, but in this condition she was vulnerable.

Emerald pools find a dark mare entering her home. Nostrils flare as she stares, reading the body language. It seems when she determines that the other is nomadic and perhaps looking for a home, does Cryil move forward. "Hello there." Tones are low but warm as she makes the greeting. Limbs move the mare a few paces off as to not crowd her. "Welcome to Gemstone Ridge. I'm Cryil." The tall mare's greets the other with a nod and a smile, awaiting the others reply curiously.

It is difficult to direct an entire herd, but Njenyi is up for the challenge. The larger his harm the better; more eyes can keep a better watch. The more members of the herd, the less work there is for Njenyi. He can then focus on protecting them from predators and roving bachelors, and doing his best to keep them as safe and happy as possible.

They split off individually as they enter the Gemstone Ridge, and the striped stallion follows a black filly. She runs to the edge of a cliff, and Njenyi holds back to watch, unsure exactly where she plans on going. she slips on some lose stone and he steps forward in concern just as she catches her balance.

"Careful," he says in his gravelly voice, "Rocks dangerous."

It seems that Cryil has also heard them entering, and as the bay and white mares comes closer, Njenyi moves forward to greet her. She is round with his child, and he presses his muzzle to her swollen barrel with evident affection.
