    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    Home.

Her once-home, at least. Katniss hadn’t considered the Dale home ever since she had grown too uncomfortable here, ever since her worries had consumed her and made it impossible for her to focus on anything. There was a domino-effect of failures that had all stemmed from her own insecurities.

And now, well… none of them had really left. She had set out to find this place again with all these thoughts of reconnecting and bravery. How she missed Reagan! And Lionel! And, well, Tiphon too. Thoughts of the gold-touched stallion made her stomach tingle in a way she did not appreciate, thoughts of how she had failed him as a mother to their children only loading on the reasons why going back to the Dale was not a good idea.

But, there was the chance that he wasn’t there, right? None of them might be there anymore. They could have all left just as she did and found new homes somewhere else.

She couldn’t believe that was what she was hoping for but it certainly would make this return easier. No explanations, no awkward encounters. That was the only thing stopping her from shifting into the seed of a dandelion and letting the wind carry her wherever it would.

All she wanted was a brief conversation with a complete stranger so she could see how the Dale was doing and that was in.

Brave (ish) in her thoughts, but in reality her legs trembled as she followed the path into the valley and summer-green eyes took in the sight of the kingdom for the first time in many years. She still felt it, still felt as though this was home, but she had ruined that before and did not have the heart to do it again.

Taking in a steadying breath, Katniss reminded herself of the plan and made the descent into the Dale.

We danced with monsters through the night

Tiphon lost track of the years that trickled past since Katniss left. Their sons faded with the seasons as well, leaving the angel king alone to his thoughts. Their abandonment worried him at first and struck every cord inside him, but then the months hardened him and he turned his mind elsewhere. There was no other option.

Loss is something all too familiar. He had lost his parents, his twin, loves, children, homes. The list would’ve continued on if he hadn’t built a formidable wall around himself when facing someone new. Although Tiphon yearned for companionship he knew better than to search for it because it always resulted in despair. It’s why so few have been able to truly penetrate through his stony mask and know what lies underneath. It has been a façade to protect himself.

Because of that notion of self-withdrawal Tiphon almost hesitates when he first glimpses Katniss. Is she here to stay or will she leave him again just as she did before with their twins? His stomach churns uncomfortably. There is really no other option than to face her again. With his mind reeling Tiphon approaches her with a curious glimmer in his molten gold eyes. ”Katniss,” he tastes her name for the first time in years; it’s sugar on his tongue, ”How are you?” Their past is evaded and tucked away into the back of his mind. Maybe the past can remain just that, and they can simply move forward.

The hopes that the pale palomino mare had of entering the Dale and leaving unnoticed by any that remembered her vanished as soon as she spied him. Those green eyes, the lush green of summer foliage, widen in surprise before she remembered herself. It was not so strange that he was here, though she had hoped otherwise to avoid this very moment and whatever unfortunate effect it had on the twist in her stomach. Not everyone was like her, not everyone turned and fled from all equine company when it became evident that she had been truly starting to care for the little family they created. The fear of failure had caused her to flee but her flee had caused her to fail. It was a treacherous cycle and one that Katniss wasn’t sure she had the strength to break free from.

Her name on his lips did not send chills down her spine or cause her knees to buckle as she had feared. Such reactions were not built into the quiet plant mare. She had not spent the years away pining for the molten eyes that watched her now, but the reaction she felt upon seeing Tiphon was not unpleasant. There was warmth there and a flush of embarrassment as she remembered what had passed between them. They had barely even been friends when they had conceived their twins and he had been kind to her at their birth, offering to help her when she was scared of what sort of mother she would be.

She knew now that she had been right to be afraid. Katniss had been a terrible mother and a worse friend and diplomat.

“Hello Tiphon.” Despite the tangled mess of thoughts and emotions inside of her mind she greeted him with a smile. There was a moment where she twitched her muzzle, thinking in one instant to move it to greet him as a friend but in the next deciding against it. They were back to being strangers, weren’t they? “I am well, and yourself?” She stayed careful to use the present tense - keep the conversation light and away from the darker thoughts. She should apologize, she had much to apologize for, but she did not let herself say the words just yet. “I hope all has been well in the Dale.” Oh wait, how many times was she going to say the word 'well'? She hoped not too many to be noticeable, it had been far too long since she had needed to be skilled in polite conversation.
