    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

It all remains the same- Any

He felt her shift and ultimately stand. He made no move to follow until she nudged him, urging him to awake with her. He slowly opened his green hues, smiling as she was the first thing he saw.

    "Good  morning."

He muttered as he stood, dormant bones popping at the motion. He stretched out, reveling in the crack of his back. With a roll of his shoulders, he was finally fully awake. His neck extended to let him lip affectionately at the pale mare's ear.

    "Did you sleep well?"

Zephyr listened to the bones that popped and cracked as Krigare stood, and soon his figure was at her side. She felt him nibble playfully at her satellite, and the sensation made her ear flicker. She smiled as he spoke to her, taking in his rich baritone.

"Good morning," She replied, craning her neck to nip affectionately at his muzzle. "I think that's the best sleep I have ever had." She admitted, shifting her weight to relax the right side of her body. She was feeling rather good this morning - her body was well rested, the climate of Tephra felt perfect upon her pelt, and she was accompanied by the stallion she had taken a quick liking to.

    "How was your slumber?"

He smiled at her affection, leaning into it briefly. He was pleased to know she slept well, especially knowing that it was beside him.

    "Just as wonderful as yours~"

He hummed, searching the ground below him for some sort of plant to munch upon. His body shook as he worked, riding his dark pelt of dirt and leaves.

    "So you will stay here?"

He inquired after finally finding something to eat, for the question had nagged at him all night. Well at least since she told him she would.

Zephyr grinned as Krigare leaned into her affectionate nibble. She listened as the stallion searched the ground for food, his breath blowing the leaves around her. He shook beside her and she moved for him to have more room.

"I'm glad you slept well," The pale mare spoke, turning to face him. He asked her if she would stay. She remembered the question from last night, but she knew he needed some kind of reassurance that she would. She felt the wave begin to brew in the back of her mind.

This thought was scary...she was uncertain of what the future would hold if she put all her trust into him. What if he left? Then she would be left to navigate life on her own again. Her nostrils sucked in a breath of ashy air; she needed to calm and focus on what was going on now...if anything happened, she would have to worry about it later.

    "Of course I will."

    He could have kissed her.

Though he held back, opting to rub his muzzle against her shoulder instead. He would keep his promise to be her eyes, to make sure she never got lost, or get scared of her home.

    "I'm glad."

His voice was full of admiration for the alabaster mare in front of him. He couldn't think of anything else to say, so he let the silence between them do the talking for him.

He was overjoyed that she would be staying.

The mare felt Krigare's soft muzzle rub on his shoulder affectionately. She leaned in to it, enjoying the breath down her ivory pelt. In many ways, she could feel the stallion's excitement - the way his breathing stopped for a moment when she had told him she would be staying, the way he immediately wanted to touch her as if he couldn't contain himself...she enjoyed it that; being with someone who was so happy to have her around.

Zephyr turned her pale head to trace outline of his muscles with her snout delicately. She paid attention to how soft his coat felt along her muzzle, how powerfully built he was...then she felt the fibrous tissue of scars covering his body.

In some ways, this made her nervous. As she outlined them, she wondered what he had done to earn them. What fights, what trauma had he endured? What had caused...this? It reminded her she had so much to learn about him; she had to take it slow.

She removed her muzzle from the side of his body.

Everyone has scars...some just aren't as visible... Zephyr thought to herself, a reminder that she had to trust him. He had been so wonderful to her; she couldn't let the marks on his body blind her from this fact.

"You lead the way," She encouraged, grinning sweetly at him.

He feels her linger upon the scars, hesitance in the movement.
He sighed, shifting his weight from foot to foot.

"Sometimes, Zephyr. We do things we regret to protect those we love."

The stallion's voice was soft, an answer to the unspoken question that weighed him down. He said this almost for himself alone, though she had a part in his words. It was true, the dark stagwould do anything and everything to protect those he held dear. It was a primal instinct rooted deep into his bones.

The puckered pink flesh was a horrendous reminder of all the hardships he had gone through to get this far, and he regretted it all. Yes, it gave him the life he had now, but he wished he was more level headed with the ones who had made him this way.

He wished he would have spoken more peace rather than fight any who challenged him.

    "Now. We must be off."

The mare's hesitant pause on the scars riddling his hide caused the deep bay stallion to reply to her. The words were softly spoken, nearly to himself, but they hit Zephyr like a brick.

"Sometimes, Zephyr, we do things we regret to protect those we love."

A simple statement with powerful meaning. She pondered these words - her mind racing to find something to reply with, but ultimately coming up with nothing. Her entire life, she was a huge burden to bare, someone to be ignored - someone that was better off dead. No one had loved her enough in her life to endure pain...or inflict it upon anyone else.

She flicked her satellite when Krigare said it was time to go, but she was still off in her own mind. Would she - no, could she, allow him to risk his body...his life...for her? She wasn't sure, but she genuinely hoped it would never come to that. She cared deeply for him, although they had only just met, and the thought of him hurting made her nervous.

Through the anxiousness, however, Zephyr felt the need to move herself closer to him, and she nestled at his side, barrel to barrel, waiting for him to lead her away.

He allowed her to get close, his curved ears flicking at the movement.
    Had he scared her?
The stallion sucked in a deep breath, legs pulling him to the heart of the land.
It was time she got a proper feel of the place now that she was to stay here.
How was he to tell her she was included in this? A mere two days and the stallion was swimming in his feelings for her. Of course, he would endure these things for her.
Like he said, he did these things for the people he loved.

Krigare's legs pulled him away, and Zephyr followed him. Her legs moved just slow enough behind him for her to make way of her surroundings. She felt him near her, and therefore she felt safe.

Back through the dense brush of trees, away from the abode where she had spent the night. The stallion led her back through the grasses, and the familiarity of greenery swept across her shanks. The tide was low today - she could hear how the waves barely crashed along the shore. The ocean air mixed with the ash of the volcano to create a unique smell of salt and sulfur - she now knew this smell would tell her she was home.

She realized she wasn't as close to Krigare as she needed to be, so she quickened her pace until her head rested near his flank. She kept her jaw square to him, letting him lead her where she needed to be - trusting him to lead her in the right direction. A feat not very accomplished by many, but that he had somehow managed.

Her emotions were mixed, but mostly she felt happy - their slow pace moving steadily across the lands of Tephra, his body so close to hers. She rubbed her head gently on him, letting him know she was there; she was allowing him to take her where they needed to be. In that moment, she felt at peace
