    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

The Bastards, The Vultures, The Wolves [Solace/Kaiode/Any]

the secret of our world is written in the stars

The tiny little colt that is technically his little brother has fascinated Svedka from the start. The palomino and ivory colt did not treat Kaiode with fragility or worry, despite knowing his adopted brother’s trials and trepidations that he’s already experienced in such a short life. The two were rather rambunctious together, which made the worry on Tang and Solace’s features become more apparent and noticeable, but Svedka could not help encouraging Kaiode to explore and adventure with him. Today, though, perhaps it is good that the blue-streaked twin decides to go his own way on his own.

He is still young, but with each day he continues to grow stronger and bigger, his muscles forming beneath his beautiful painted coat, becoming more confident with his legs. He especially enjoys that his mane and tail are growing longer and more flowing, desperately wishing that he could have the long, wild mane that his parents have. The red and black feather that is tucked neatly behind his ear is beginning to disappear beneath the white and blue of his mane, however short it may be. Slender legs purposely allow him to leap and bound over tiny rivulets of magma, humming to himself and he jumps from each hardened surface of lava rock to the next.

A scream shatters his calm thoughts, causing his legs to stand perfectly straight beneath him and his muscles to tense beneath his skin. It is Solace’s voice, he didn’t even have to try and think about it, and it is not a sound he enjoys hearing. For the first time in his short life, true fear fills his heart as he feels his body becoming cold with dread. He is frozen for just a second before he leaps expertly through the way that he had come, his intense blue eyes set on finding his sister.

When he arrives, it is just as the brilliant beam of light flashes from Solace’s forehead, blinding him and causing him to stagger and slow. He calls to her with a confused and frightened whinny, blinking wildly as he impatiently waits for his sight to come back. The first thing he sees is the familiar stallion standing over the two that are easily seen as Solace and Kaiode. He is frozen in fear yet again, watching as pleas leave their lips in strain and grief, understanding completely what has happened to his adopted brother.

“Solace,” he breathes so quietly, so delicately, to her as he walks to her side, her knees bloodied and bruised from her own fall. His pale muzzle presses gently to her neck, hoping his touch would encourage her more than his words. He waits for her to look at him.

“It’s time to go,” he murmurs softly, nudging her. His blue eyes, crystal clear and glazed with the threat of unshed tears, glance to Diable Rouge and to Kaiode – but he is Kaiode no more.

Sirana was content with grazing, as the stallion thought, unknown to her, but the sound of galloping hooves caused her to look up and see what was causing them. A small smile appeared on her face as she saw that the stallion of the group was now frolicking with the foals, disappearing when she saw him focusing her attention back on her again for a brief moment.

The golden mare didn't know if the stallion was a permanent resident here in the Tephra, as she'd only seen him afar from passing glances. She didn't have his name yet, and hadn't really inquired to any other residents about it because she figured they probably didn't know him either. She hardly saw him here anyways, so figuring that any other residents didn't know his name became the logical conclusion because, if he was a permanent resident, he'd be here more often.

From this distance, Sirana couldn't tell that the stallion was smiling at her. She could only see him turning his gaze from the golden mare herself back to the foals, obviously checking to see if he was being chased since one of the foals appeared to be going after the others.

The other grown horse, perhaps a mare, was preoccupied with watching the foals. She appeared to be saying something to the stallion as one of the foals got ahead of the others, another one of lighter color chasing the one running. Sirana didn't see any present danger with how they were playing, but one of the foals might have sensed something she didn't. The lighter colored foal playing tag called out to her playmate, pushing herself to gallop over the earth covered in a layer of hardened lava. Sirana could tell that she was having some trouble, obviously not used to running over such a hard surface. The golden mare was more accustomed, having lived here a while, and though she didn't sense any danger she turned to watch the foal racing ahead of the others.

The lighter foal followed after her playmate, both of them disappearing into the jungle lining the Tephra. Sirana, mildly interested, started walking in their direction to make sure that the two of them didn't hurt themselves. Her light brown eyes were trained on the area of trees where the two foals had disappeared into, and for a moment, with their words muffled by the jungle and the silence once again hanging over Tephra, everything was normal.

And then, it wasn't. Sirana had seen and heard of horses with incredible talents, but she wouldn't have expected one like this to come from a foal. Without warning, a large cascade of light erupted from the trees, powerful enough that it made Sirana turn her head and lift one of her legs in an effort to shield her eyes. For a moment, once it dimmed down, the mare stared in confusion, not understanding at all what had just happened.

Though Sirana did not have any foals of her own, the instincts of a worried mother suddenly kicked in. She threw herself into a gallop and raced toward the trees, cutting through them to get to the foals. Within minutes she saw them, a dreaded feeling sinking into her gut.

The light colored foal was standing over the dark one, and though it appeared that he was sleeping, Sirana knew otherwise. From her respectful distance away, she couldn't see the colt's chest rising and falling which would indicate he was alive. Whatever had happened here, Sirana didn't know, but it obviously had dire consequences.

The stallion came over as well, asking for the light colored foal to go back to her mother. The third foal was also here, comforting the other who looked a little like him. Siblings, Sirana told herself. She just stood there, watching the family from a distance. She honestly didn't know what to say right now, given the situation. What could she say? There was nothing she could do, or say, to make them all feel better in the wake of such a fresh trauma like this. And she didn't know any of them personally, so even if she tried to say something it wouldn't be that meaningful.

She saw the stallion's eyes brimming with tears, watching as he laid his head on the foal's stomach. Sirana felt a pang go through her heart, feeling empathy for the grown horse despite not even knowing his name. She lowered her head and closed her eyes, saying a silent prayer for the young colt and the family that was now going to have to move on without him.

    Solace

She watches the little dark face until her vision begins to blur. Not from tears, from the inanity to hold focus, her eyes are glazed and dry.
Then Rou is there, close, too close - stirring panic in her chest.

    No, no, no.
Leave us alone, we are fine. He will get up in a moment. Go away. Let me make this better. Come back in a minute.

    Get up, little brother.

In her mind, she touches him, he breaths, he leaps to his feet much like the first time they had met on the beach when her mother's milk had been all that was needed to bring him back from deaths valley. In her mind, he is running off for another game of chase - a game which doesn't end in sadness.

But her imagination is far from reality and in reality, she doesn't move, doesn't blink, her words are only spoken in her mind.

Only Svedka breaks her trance, her head turning slowly towards her twin. She finds the strength to stand in those clear blue eyes of his.

Yes, he is tired. Poor little thing, he always did need more sleep than us.

But her mouth remains shut as she stands, clumps of blood and mud marring her perfect white knees. Without a word, Solace leans on her twin, following wherever he may lead like a lamb - only truly realizing what she already knew as they put what is now the past behind them.

Her chest rattles with a sob and she chokes on the emotion washing over her in ugly gasps. With a groan Solace breaks into a gallop, leaving her twin, a trail of tears streaming behind her.

    you are my sunshine
