    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    Keeper-

Hyaline is split in three by rivers that leak out of the blue lake. She knows that quite a few of them prefer the shade of the wisteria trees and the brilliance of the lake-waters. Keeper can admire these attributes of Hyaline, looks on them often enough with a fondness reserved for the likes of friends because that is what the kingdom is to her - a friend, with open arms.

The problem is, Keeper has not one but two spots that she prefers.
It just depends on what shape she is in at the moment as to which is most often occupied by her.

Keeper-the-bear has claimed a cave on the northern face of the mountain closest to the blue lake. The grizzly sow had discovered the cavern during the earliest part of last winter, her instinct to hibernate having driven her to find a prime location for exactly that reason - to hibernate. By now, the cave is just an extension of that winter self - all that remains is bits of shed bear fur, a bed of dry grass and dust, and some nuts in the far corner that a squirrel sequestered there as the bear slept.

That squirrel would have made a nice mid-winter snack but she had been well fed going into her hibernation. Well, not quite well-fed but close enough to it to last and not wake up in the midst starving. It was Keeper-the-horse who kept waking up in a bear’s bed, confused and frightened. But that was before and this is now.

Keeper-the-horse though has her own favorite spot - a red maple tree that stands alone, farthest apart from all the other maple trees. She spent all fall beneath that tree, napping as it shed it’s fiery leaves all over her back. Now, the leaves are back and thick on the branches as summer grows hot and heavy around them. Sometimes, a cool breeze somes singing down off the mountain and blows through the branches of her maple tree, cooling her skin.

So it depends on how one discovers Keeper - as bear or horse, but the bear is fast becoming used to the horse negating the need to rend the meat from their delicious bones. Keeper-the-horse inside Keeper-the-bear just won’t allow it, so the bear’s own primal nature begins to subside enough to allow the gentler horse to rule through the bearskin. Right now though, she is Keeper-the-horse beneath the red maple tree and since she is not napping for once, she is quite approachable with her head down in the grass, cutting it shorter with her teeth and being ever mindful of the passage of ants that go by.
