    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

Mother seemed to be in no hurry to leave, which was a nice change. Hyaline was pretty, especially with snow everywhere. He was coming up on his first birthday, and was now big and strong enough to break through smaller snow drifts on his own. Which was what he was doing now.

He hadnt set out with much of a plan, and was mildly surprised to find his feet bringing him to the place near the edge of the lake where they had first entered Hyaline. Ice laced the edges of the lake, making frilly patterns that snapped in a satisfying way when he stepped on them.

Soon after that his path lead him to the rocky protrudences that betrayed the location of Hyaline's cave system. His ears flicked backwards and forwards as sort of familiar scent was inhaled. Scruffy boys of brush stabbed through the snow at the entrance of a central cave, scratching lightly at his thin legs.

The pale boy stared into the darkness thoughtfully for a moment before raising a hoof and rapping it smartly against the stone floor three times. Darkness would be falling soon, sooner now that the days were getting cold. He stared upwards, momentarily entranced by the fine glittering dust of snow that was beginning to fall from the sky again.
