    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

take a bullet to the heart just to keep you safe; any
    #1

He had recuperated some while in the Pampas. Though he was still bone-thin and his overo coat remained rather lackluster, he could breathe easy. Never again would he take that for granted. The plague that had nearly killed him had been driven out by his distant cousin, Noah, and as spring came upon the lands, he had rested in the broad fields of the Pampas in order to regain a measure of strength.

Kora had stayed only long enough to ascertain that he had been healed, yet during that time Leander had quickly realized that his sister was with child. He hadn’t noticed it before – not when his mind had been lost to the fog of his delirium – but as soon as she’d returned to check up on him after the healing, her pregnancy was made quite plain. Of course, she refused to speak of it with him. Now that Lee was no longer teetering on the brink between life and death, all traces of the care and concern she’d momentarily shown had frozen back over.

She tolerated his poking and prodding for just a few days before vanishing – though at least this time she’d told him where she was going. “Back,” she’d said. Knowing that spring was almost upon them, Leander had watched her go in the hopes that she was returning to the child’s father, whom he assumed was on the Isle. Perhaps a family would melt the heart of ice that was shielded between her slender ribs.

It was naïve of him, but still, the thought gave him hope. After such a close encounter with death, Kora had at least revealed to him that she had a heart, no matter how deeply buried it was underneath the frost of her – frost that went beyond the cold armor encasing her gold-and-silver skin. Since Leander had initially been too weak to return to the Isle with her, he often passed his time in the Pampas entertaining thoughts of unclehood.

Now that spring was turning to summer, the prospect of meeting his niece or nephew made him bright with eagerness; and on this sunny afternoon, Lee was itching to feel the warm wind beneath his wings. Feeling stronger than he’d felt in months, he decided to attempt a short test flight over the Pampas’ sprawling meadows. The severity of his illness had kept him grounded for far too long.

Spreading his wings wide, he beat them twice against the air before taking a running leap into the skies. He couldn’t help letting loose a whoop of jubilance as he climbed upward, only to dive moments later before catching the wind again. Leander rollicked coltishly for a while as he flew, until finally he wheeled in a lazy circle and touched down, his breath coming clear and hard from lungs that delighted in their newfound freedom.

Gladdened by the short exertion, he felt sure he could now begin covering small distances again. After all, he had hoped to start tracking down a few people in other parts of Beqanna who’d been on his mind lately – his ever-elusive sister included. Tomorrow, he promised himself. I’ll leave tomorrow. For now, he would enjoy the Pampas’ fresh breeze and flower-strewn fields – and so he lowered his head to graze rather contentedly amidst the lush grasses surrounding him.
