    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

There is light in Tephra again, and though it is not the same - it draws Vastra in like a moth. She’s pleased with the idea of knowing this child won’t be born into shadows. She’s spent a long winter in shadows being cold and angry, furious over being in such a vulnerable state even as she feels the prickle of excitement over being a parent again. She had been so happy when Brunhilde had been pregnant - but there had been nothing to overshadow her joy then.

Though she intends to introduce the child to Svedka, to give him the option of being involved or not, Vastra makes a point of first finding somewhere private for what’s about to happen. It was bad enough lumbering around in the darkness feeling five times as heavy as she normally did, she didn’t need anyone to witness this next part and she certainly didn’t want any help.

Some pain and a great deal of cursing later, the filly she births is a brilliant blue, reminiscent of what the sky used to be, and it’s a bit of a shock. She was, of course, aware that Svedka had some blue in his mane and tail but she hadn’t expected the whole damn child to be blue. She’s just moving to stand, to care for the filly, when it begins again. A surprised, and annoyed, growl escapes her. Twins. Twins!

She returns to the soft tropical earth and snarls at the glowing bird that perches overhead, casting it’s soft golden light on the new family. If it registers her, it gives no sign.

The second child has no wings (Vastra quickly swallows her disappointment on that front) and there’s only a little bit of blue. In fact, this filly almost looks like… Pteron?

    “Huh.”

For a second she continues to lie there and just stares at the pair, trying to figure it out. She knows the father is Svedka, there’s no doubt about that at all, but she still looks at the two beautiful fillies and wonders just how they have turned out as they have.

The annoying part over with, the anger she’s been holding onto seeps away and she follows the instincts she thought she had lost. She moves to them, cares for them, and whickers softly to the girls as she encourages them to stand. The storm in her eyes has calmed, though she cannot shake the worry that she’s not suited for this role at all. It has been a long time since she bore children herself.
