GRAVITAS
There is a frantic murmur in his heart as he approaches The Cove.
He fought off death the last time he was here, an army of bones sent after him and Tirza by their father.
He is quiet as he moves, his nostrils flaring.
There is no reason for him to be here except to prove to himself that she is still here. That she still lives. If only to provide fuel for his intense hatred. It shudders and shivers in the pit of his gut as he gets closer.
And there had been some weight lifted from his shoulders when he had realized that the serpent had left him. There was no part of the viper left in him. It had been replaced by a line of diamonds drawn across his brow, splashed across his chest. It had been replaced by something stronger, something exclusively his. And whatever it was she had asked the magicians to give him had been replaced to. There was so little of her left in him and what a relief it was.
There is no reason for him to be here except there is some part of him that has to know.
He had not even told Tirza he was coming.
And there she is.
Standing exactly where he’d thought he’d find her.
Standing on some outcropping. Watching.
And he knows that there will come a time soon when she will not be there anymore.
There will come a time when she will not be anywhere.
She will be replaced and all the weight will be gone.
They will not have to worry at all.
The three of them, Spectra and Tirza and himself.
This new family. They won’t have to think about her at all.
He watches her a long time but she never so much as glances in his direction.
