    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

that day even the sun was afraid of you and the weight you carried

He watches the kelpie mare with earnest, settling into that roguish flirt that had always come so naturally to him. It was easier. It had always been easier. Pretend to be the good-for-nothing scoundrel who gave lazy smiles and easy conversation. Pretend he was just the jungle cat—languid and powerful and concerned with nothing but his next meal. It had always been an easy front. An easy way for him to slip into a persona that was just a shallow imitation of the truth of him. An easy way to escape his darkness.

It is only when Ledger begins to growl that Firion’s control begins to slip.

His golden gaze sharpens on the familiar looking stallion and his lips peel back against sharpened teeth. “You’ll be civil or you’ll be gone,” he snarls, the shadows pulling in tighter around his golden form. The shadow creature lifts itself from where it had been resting and grows slightly in size, becoming darker as Firion feeds some of his magic into it. He could tear the answers from Ledger if he wanted. Rip his mind to shreds to find the source of that growl, but his anger fades quickly enough and he leaves it be.

He casts a sideways glance to Sabal, determining that she can fight her own battles, before he releases his magic and lets some of the moonlight flood into their space once more. “Firion,” he offers his name to them both, turning his attention toward the kelpie. “I don’t think anyone who tried failed.” A kinder answer than he was usually opt to give but a genuine one, at least. He could not fault anyone who had stood there and tried to bring the sun back—not those who died nor those who took the wrong turn.

At Ledger’s question, he glances back, feeling the shadow come to rest before him once more.

“It feels more like a curse than a gift,” he answers before he can stop himself.

His laughter follows quickly. Deep and full-throated.

Unwilling to explain why he found it so funny, he just shakes his head, his laughter receding.

“Not die this time, I guess.”

so you saluted every ghost you've ever prayed to and then buried it where bones are buried
