    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

Areane rarely has a moment alone.

She hadn't been born alone, and since that moment, there has always been Starros. There had been her brother, and then there had been their father and their mother. Their dam has many names; she has heard their pale sire call her everything from Wildling to dear to milady. Their father also apparently has many names; by the time that she and her twin are old enough to wander around Loess without one of their parents in the immediate vicinity, Areane learns that their father is called everything from Champion to Glow Worm.

But she also learns other things.

The canyons of their home are everywhere. As a young pegasi, there are plenty of ledges to find (and though they have been told otherwise, now they are supposed to be napping), Areane is eager to find one now. It isn't uncommon for Mother to not always be in the cavern nest that they bed down in each night, and as the young filly glances in both direction, she smiles at the realization that there are hours yet until dusk. Her excitement manifests the small red pebbles around her hooves and they roll together to make a small lizard, one that scurries towards a nook where Areane knows her brother goes to escape the midday heat.

"Starros?" she calls out, and before the final echo of her high voice rings against sandstone walls, another rock lizard scurries around the corner.

Usually, Starros curls into his favourite nook to nap away the hottest part of the day. While he is happy to curl up near his family at night, during the day he wants his space. Not to be stuck dealing with all of Areane’s 100 limbs. He is sort of napping there today, mostly drifting in and out of sleep while his mind wanders. It keeps coming back to the idea of winter that had been introduced to them lately. Their mom didn’t seem too pleased about describing the ice and snow but to Starros, because it was new, it sounded pretty wonderful.

He’s just trying to think of what colour snow might be when the sound of pebbles on sandstone draws his attention just as he hears his sister’s voice.

Areane sends in a lizard made of rocks and Starros sends out one made of light. He follow closely behind it, a grin bright in his eyes - he’s very proud of the little lizard. Especially the part where it tries to crawl up his twin’s nose before it fades into nothing.

And then, without any sort of greeting or preamble, without even asking if there had been anything in particular she wanted, he tilts his head up to the sky and asks “When do you think it’s gonna get cold? I want to see snow.”

Where the stone lizard skitters off to, Areane loses track (and focus) of the moment that one made of light attempts to crawl up her nose. Her dark head had been lowered to the ground, more curious than cautious, and it jerked abruptly back at the manifestation. Her nostrils wrinkled, and the young pegasus stepped back to allow herself the room to shake out her growing mane and wings (just in case Starros' creation decided to get comfortable).

Only when she is sure that nothing is out of place among her blue-sheened feathers does she look to her twin, who looks up at the sky.

Areane glances up as well, as if the answer to his question might be found there. Seeing nothing but clouds and blue sky, she turns her attention back to Starros. "Mama said soon," she tells him, remembering the earlier conversation where Altissima had mentioned Winter to their father. Her delicately tipped ears flicked forward and back, thinking that their mother made the season sound as appealing as the dry sage grass Tarian encouraged them to try.

Her nose wrinkled petulantly at the thought.

"Maybe," Areane tacks on. Tucking her wings neatly against her petite frame, she lowers her head to look at her brother carefully. She waited a moment longer, and wondering exactly how long they might have to wait, she asks: "Do you think we should go looking for some?"
