    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

a bright new dream that I was stepping in
    #1
    Mazikeen
They don’t come as early as the others had but it is difficult to judge the beginning of spring here. Snow still covers much of Hyaline when Mazikeen finally accepts that anxiously pacing isn’t going to get this over any faster and she relents, seeking a sheltered spot in the forest. No caves for her, not anymore - not if she can help it.

Although this is not her first child, there are firsts still. It’s the first where she isn’t expecting to die later on that same day, the first where she doesn’t intend to leave it with someone else to care for, the first where she isn’t alone. The first with Firion.

It’s been two years since she had woken up next to him by the sea.

This has been the longest stretch of (relative) consistency in her life - certainly the longest she’s ever gone without dying. Though she had come closer to it again than she cared for.

As always there isn’t just one thing going through her mind - she’s caught in a whirlwind of nerves, happiness, pain, and embarrassment. Having never witnessed a birth she hadn’t been actively a part of, she has sudden doubts about whether it’s weird that she wanted him there. The desire to not be alone was so foremost in her mind that she often wondered if it was blinding her to the unease of others.

He could say no, she attempts to rationalize with herself. He could leave, or just turn his head. He could leave his body and she would again pretend that didn’t frighten her because she would never begrudge him the opportunity to escape for a while.

Today those doubts only last as long as it takes for him to offer her comfort, even when she grumbles and growls in discomfort and pain.

There are going to be two - she is almost certain. After the first, Mazikeen sees deep red in the corner of her eye and panics. Her heartbeat is a roar in her head dulling everything else as she twists around with wild eyes only to find a daughter with a rich crimson coat and a speckling of gold. As the panic fades a soft laugh escapes her in relief. She does not get much time to greet this one before the other wants to arrive as well and then it is late in the afternoon when the near-matching fillies are clean and taking their first steps.

The deep red of their coats is entertaining now that the alarm has faded - memories of changing her colour that once in an attempt to make Firion laugh. And now here their daughters wore it on their skin.

She wonders if the same twisting combination of nerves and happiness is coursing through him - her orange eyes bright as they turn away from the twins and she reaches for him. Words stick in her throat, so she speaks with her touch instead - all the wonder at finding themselves here, all the love she feels radiating through her. The hope that even if they are both a little scared, a little nervous, they have each other.

any excuse for me to post rambling Maze thoughts
