    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    they're gonna eat me alive.

The world she’d returned to was not the one she remembered.
But did it really matter what was real?

It didn’t to the blue mare, at least not anymore. She could hardly differentiate between reality and her own nightmares.  She didn’t even try any longer. It didn’t matter. Nothing mattered.

This was not the world that she remembered. Had it all been a dream? Or was this strange land, reborn of the ruins of her homeland, the dream?

Nightmares plagued the mare who allowed herself to sleep only when her body was well beyond the point of physical exhaustion. In her dreams, she could still taste the metallic tang of blood in her mouth. She could see and smell the fear as others fled from her.  The screams rang so loudly in her ears she could hear them even when she awoke - trembling on the cold, hard  ground.

She’d kept herself isolated as much as possible - trying to fade away into the shadows her mother worshiped. She was dangerous. She was a monster. She knew what she was capable of and refused to subject anyone to her treachery.  In her solitude she mourned for what could have been.  More telling, in moments of weakness she wondered what it would be like to taste blood and flesh again…

So the girl passed through the trees like a waif, with sunken ribs and hollow eyes, watching as life moved on all around her.

    Without her.
