    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

His head pulses with fog, confusion. But she is okay and that is what matters. It doesn’t matter that his stomach still heaves with whatever poison she’d pushed through him or that his own muscles tremble with the agony that had seized him.

    She is okay.
    She is okay.

She tries to rise and he staggers away on shaky legs, his heart clenching in a painful fist as she crashes back down again. He stumbles back to her side, pressing his cold nose to her shoulder in hopes of soothing her. As if he is capable. As if there is anything in him that is capable of offering her any reprieve at all.

His vision still blurs at the edges but he tries for a shaky smile all the same. Because she is alive, she is okay. They have both clawed their way out of the jaws of death and that is what matters. It will be several minutes before he has the strength to shift back into his equine form, so for now he remains the wolf, its great furred head laid across her shoulder.

Had he been looking for her? He must have been. Otherwise how could he have found her?

Of course I was,” he says and he means it. He believes it. It is not a lie because he means it with his whole heart. “I would not have let you die alone out here,” he tells her, gently nudging her nose with his muzzle.
heard your voice leading me home
Through the darkness to the dawn
