    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

WATCH THE FLAMES CLIMB HIGH INTO THE NIGHT

Summer wore on dutifully this year. Swath in warmth, the season spread her joy across Beqanna rather kindly, perhaps recognizing how cruel it might be to deliver natural disasters during this time of contagion and illness. Then again, Scorch never considered the Beqannan gods to be merciful, so perhaps it was just luck - or perhaps their minds lay elsewhere. Either way, the Dosh spent her days thankful for the kind weather, meandering between residents and offering crone-ish advice.

At night, she often found herself beside the magician she'd chosen as her own some months ago... Had it been more than a year now? She shook her head to think of it as such. More and more these days, a kind of guilt grew in her chest, and she worried that Brennen would pick up on it as he usually could; but he made no mention of her disquiet.

    Not overtly, at least.

As they stood together in pleasant harmony, Scorch would hear the familiar calls of her native Jungle creatures; leopards and parrots and elephants alike. At first she'd been shocked, waking from a dream and nearly panicking for her desperate want of home; but Brennen's subtle gift to her gradually became expected as she fell to sleep. The lullaby of home eased her discomfort effectively, and for now, her guilt became sidelined.

    Her thoughts, however, never quieted.

Cantering purposefully towards the small grove of trees she knew to be frequented by her son and his wife the Queen, Scorch's mind played with several harmless theories as to their relationship. She compared them first to her and Hestoni, then to Echion and herself, and then to Brennen and Galilee and then again to herself and Brennen. She had lived long enough now that endless comparisons could be made - and her immortality ensured that she would only continue to accumulate more and more relations as the makeup of Beqanna gradually changed over the course of time.

As she thought, the brawny muscles of her figure contracted and relaxed beneath the thin gauze of her mutilated hide, their strength an impressive representation of her health in these times of illness. While she suspected that she had definitely been introduced to the contagion by now, Scorch figured that the symptoms would not be coming her way. Too much time passed for that; she lived now without fear of the plague, as foolish as that may be.

Grove now in sight, the ancient Amazon pulled up short and tossed her head. In the next moment, a spectacular eruption of bright stars bloomed above her, summoning the family which hopefully resided within the grove at this time. Then, Scorch playfully had an idea; an in the next moment, long black strands of mane and tail cascaded down her neck and haunches, perfectly detailed threads of darkness-made horse hair completed even with highlights to texturize them. Peering around her rump to admire her handiwork, Scorch settled into a hip triumphantly; wouldn't this be a surprise!

    ...Sometimes, it's the little things.
